First Letter Case changes exactly one letter per line, or one letter in the whole text, to uppercase or lowercase. It exists because the common request - capitalise the start of each line - is not the same as title case, and running a title-case tool over a list destroys the casing of every other word. The page finds the first letter in its scope, skipping punctuation and spaces, and changes only that character. Scope is a choice: each line, which suits a list of names or sentences, or the whole text, which suits a single paragraph. The rest of the text is untouched. The result reports how many lines or texts actually changed, so an already-capitalised input is visible rather than silently unchanged. It is the tool for fixing a lowercased list, capitalising the first word of each pasted row, and repairing a paragraph that lost its opening capital without rewriting the rest. Scope is the whole difference between this and a title-case tool: a list of names needs each line touched, while a single paragraph needs only its opening. The first letter is found after any leading quotes, brackets or spaces, so a line that begins with a quotation mark still gets its first word capitalised. Nothing else on the line is altered, which makes the operation safe for code-like rows where only the first token should change. A line with no letters at all, such as a separator of dashes, is returned unchanged and is not counted. The lowercase direction is useful for converting shouted headings without touching the rest of the row. The changed count helps verify a batch before pasting. The result is a new string; the input is untouched. A line that starts with a digit is left alone until a letter appears.

Frequently asked questions about First Letter Case

Does it capitalise every word?

No. Only the first letter of the chosen scope changes; that is title case's job, not this tool's.

What if the line starts with a quote?

The first letter after the punctuation is changed; the quote itself is left alone.

Can I change only the whole text, not every line?

Yes. Set the scope to the whole text to change a single opening letter.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Editing runs in your browser; nothing is sent to a server or stored.
