Character Counter reports four measurements of the same text - characters, UTF-8 bytes, lines and words - with the counting rules stated rather than implied. That matters because the four numbers disagree, and the disagreement is usually the point: a hundred Arabic characters occupy far more bytes than a hundred Latin ones, an emoji carrying a skin-tone modifier counts as several code points, and a file with mixed line endings will report a different line total depending on whether CR, LF and CRLF are all recognised. This page counts in Unicode code points, treats bytes as UTF-8, and splits lines on all three conventions, so the figures can be reproduced with a byte counter and a text editor. It is most useful before submitting something with a limit attached: a bio field, an SMS segment, an API payload, a database column. Nothing is sent anywhere, and no figure is estimated - each one is a count of what you pasted.

How to use Character Counter

  1. Paste or type text into the input area.
  2. Read the live character statistics.
  3. Copy the summary or clear to start over.

What you get

  • Character, word, line and UTF-8 byte counts for the text you pasted.
  • Counts in Unicode code points, with the page noting that an emoji carrying a modifier can count as more than one.
  • Line totals that respect CR, LF and CRLF endings rather than assuming one convention.

When to use Character Counter

  • Stay within SMS or bio character limits before posting.
  • Estimate payload size in UTF-8 bytes for API fields.
  • Check a field against an API's byte limit, where an Arabic sentence and an English one cost very different amounts.

Frequently asked questions about Character Counter

Does Character Counter upload my text?

No. All counting happens locally in your browser; nothing is sent, stored, or logged.

Why do emoji count as more than one character sometimes?

The counter uses Unicode code points. Emoji built from several code points, such as flags or skin-tone variants, count once per code point.

How are bytes calculated?

Bytes reflect UTF-8 encoding: ASCII letters use one byte each while Arabic letters use two and most emoji use four.

What counts as a line?

Text is split on carriage returns, line feeds, or CRLF pairs. An empty document has zero lines.
