Binarize Text writes the UTF-8 bytes of a string as eight-bit binary groups, one group per byte, separated by spaces. It is the low-level view of text: A becomes 01000001, while a character outside ASCII becomes several groups because UTF-8 needs more than one byte. That distinction is the point. A page that showed one group per character would be showing UTF-16 code units rather than the bytes a file actually contains, and the two disagree as soon as the text leaves ASCII. The page states that each group is a byte and that the output is not compact: eight characters per byte, plus separators, makes it roughly eight times larger than the input. There is no decode direction here; hexadecimal or decimal byte lists belong to Bytes to Text. It is the tool for teaching how UTF-8 works, checking a bit pattern, and demonstrating why a byte limit and a character limit are not the same measurement. Because the groups are bytes, comparing two outputs shows whether the underlying encoding changed even when the visible characters look identical. A single changed bit can turn a valid UTF-8 sequence into an invalid one, which is why the byte view helps when a decoder refuses a string. Each group is fixed at eight digits, so a comparison does not need to account for variable padding; a missing leading zero would be a bug. The separator is a single space, which makes the output easy to split in a script.
How to use Binarize Text
- Paste the text to binarize.
- Read the binary groups and the byte count.
- Copy the binary or clear to start over.
What you get
- Eight binary digits per UTF-8 byte, separated by spaces.
- The number of bytes represented.
- A clear statement that non-ASCII text produces multiple groups.
When to use Binarize Text
- Show how a character becomes eight bits in UTF-8.
- Check a bit pattern while debugging an encoding problem.
- Demonstrate why byte length and character length differ.
Frequently asked questions about Binarize Text
Is one group one character?
No. One group is one byte. ASCII uses one byte per character; other characters use two or more.
Can I decode the binary here?
Not on this page. The binary is a display format; use a byte decoder with hex or decimal values.
Why is the output so long?
Eight digits per byte plus separators makes it roughly eight times the input size. It is a teaching view, not storage.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Conversion runs in your browser; nothing is sent to a server or stored.
