Bytes to Text turns a list of hexadecimal or decimal byte values back into the UTF-8 string they represent. It is the reverse of Text to Bytes and the page to use when a log, a database dump or a protocol document gives you raw values instead of characters. Parsing accepts spaces, commas and semicolons between tokens, so a copied array usually needs no cleanup; hex tokens may be one or two digits, and decimal tokens must be between 0 and 255. Decoding is deliberately strict. If the byte sequence is not valid UTF-8, the page reports an error instead of inserting replacement characters, because a silent repair hides the actual problem. That also means text in another encoding, such as Latin-1, may fail or produce a different result, which the page states. It is the tool for checking what a byte sequence actually says, recovering text from a fixture, and diagnosing a mojibake bug before changing the source. A byte list copied from a debugger often contains an offset column or a trailing comment, so tokens that are not valid values are rejected with the offending token named. That makes a paste error obvious instead of producing a plausible but wrong string.

How to use Bytes to Text

  1. Paste the byte values and choose hexadecimal or decimal.
  2. Read the decoded text or the validation error.
  3. Copy the text or clear to start over.

What you get

  • The decoded UTF-8 text.
  • The number of bytes consumed.
  • A clear error for an invalid token or an invalid UTF-8 sequence.

When to use Bytes to Text

  • Decode a hexadecimal byte list back into readable text.
  • Recover a string from a test fixture that stores raw values.
  • Check whether a byte sequence is valid UTF-8 before importing it.

Frequently asked questions about Bytes to Text

What if the bytes are not valid UTF-8?

You get an error. The decoder is strict, so it does not replace bad bytes with a question mark and pretend the result is correct.

Does it support Latin-1?

No. It decodes UTF-8 only. A Latin-1 sequence may fail validation or decode to different characters.

Which separators are accepted?

Spaces, commas and semicolons. Hex values may be one or two digits; decimal values must be 0-255.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Decoding runs in your browser; nothing is sent to a server or stored.
