Truncate Text shortens a string to a maximum length and optionally appends an ellipsis, without touching the beginning. It is the precise version of cutting a paragraph by eye: choose characters or words, set the limit, and the page returns the prefix that fits. Character mode counts code points, so an emoji or a CJK glyph is one unit; word mode splits on whitespace and rejoins the kept words with single spaces, which means the original spacing is not preserved. The ellipsis is added only when something was actually removed, so a short string comes back unchanged rather than gaining a misleading marker. The result reports whether truncation happened and the original length. It is the tool for fitting a summary into a fixed field, producing a preview from a long description, and checking how much of a title survives a character limit. A character limit and a byte limit are not the same: a string of emoji can fit a hundred-character field and still exceed a hundred bytes. The page reports the original length so the cost of the cut is visible, and it leaves text shorter than the limit alone rather than adding an ellipsis to something that was never shortened. A word limit is friendlier to prose because it never leaves a half-word, while a character limit is exact; choose by what the destination actually enforces, not by which number looks smaller. The ellipsis counts toward the destination's limit in most systems, so a field of exactly N characters may need N minus one plus the marker. The original is never modified; the result is a new string.

Frequently asked questions about Truncate Text

Does it cut from the start or the middle?

Neither. It keeps a prefix and removes the end only.

Is the ellipsis always added?

No. It is added only when the text was actually truncated, so short input is unchanged.

Does word mode keep my spacing?

No. Kept words are rejoined with single spaces, so runs of whitespace collapse.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Truncation runs in your browser; nothing is sent to a server or stored.
