Input

Each line is padded live. Nothing is stored.

Whole number from 1 to 500.

Exactly one character; a space is the default.

Result

No text yet.

Paste lines and choose a width above.

Pad Text extends every line to a chosen width by repeating a character on the left, the right, or both sides. It is the plain-text equivalent of setting a field width: a column of labels becomes a block with a straight edge, a list of codes can be padded with zeros or dots, and a paragraph can be given a consistent margin. Lines that already reach the width are left exactly as they are, because padding should not silently truncate content. Both-side mode splits the missing characters, giving the extra one to the right when the difference is odd, so the result is deterministic. The width is measured in code points rather than display columns, which is the honest behaviour for a browser-side tool but means a CJK character or an emoji occupies one unit even if a monospace terminal would draw it wider. The padding character is a single code point, so a space, a dot, a zero or a dash all work. It is the tool for aligning pasted labels, padding identifiers to a fixed length, and giving short lines a common edge before printing.

How to use Pad Text

  1. Paste the lines to pad.
  2. Choose the side, the width and a single padding character.
  3. Copy the padded text or clear to start over.

What you get

  • Every line extended to the chosen width on the requested side.
  • A count of lines that needed padding.
  • The longest original line width, and unchanged lines where they were already long enough.

When to use Pad Text

  • Align a column of short labels to the same width before pasting it into a fixed-width field.
  • Left-pad identifiers with zeros to a consistent length.
  • Give short lines a shared margin for a printed plain-text handout.

Frequently asked questions about Pad Text

What happens to lines longer than the width?

They are left unchanged. The tool pads short lines but never trims long ones, so no text is lost.

Can I pad with something other than a space?

Yes. Any single character works: a zero, a dot, a dash or a symbol. Multi-character padding is rejected so the final width stays predictable.

Why is my emoji line still misaligned in a terminal?

Width counts code points. A terminal may render an emoji or a CJK character as two columns, so alignment can differ from the browser's count.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Padding runs in your browser; nothing is sent to a server or stored.
