Shortest Word Finder returns the shortest token in a passage, every word tied for that length, and the character count that won. It is the mirror of a longest-word check and answers a different question: which words carry the least information, and whether a list is padded with one-letter fragments that a filter should drop. That is useful before building a stopword list, checking tokenisation, or finding stray letters left behind by an import. Tokens are Unicode letter and digit sequences with internal apostrophes and hyphens, so a single letter is a valid winner while a punctuation mark is not a word at all. Numerals are eligible. All ties are returned rather than the first, and the result reports how many words were checked. The page states the counting rule - code points, edge punctuation excluded - so the answer can be reproduced. It is the tool for tokenisation checks, stopword work and small typography puzzles. Tokenisation is the usual reason to care: a search index, a keyword extractor and a readability formula can disagree about whether a single letter is a word. Seeing the shortest tokens makes that disagreement concrete, and a stopword list built without them often keeps fragments that carry no meaning. A list of one-letter tokens can also reveal a language that legitimately uses them, such as articles in English or conjunctions in Arabic, so context matters before filtering.

Frequently asked questions about Shortest Word Finder

Does a punctuation mark count as a word?

No. A token must contain at least one letter or digit, so punctuation-only fragments are ignored.

What if several words tie?

All are returned, one per line, so a rule can be applied to every shortest token.

Are digits eligible?

Yes. A single digit is a valid token and can be the shortest word found.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The search runs in your browser; nothing is sent to a server or stored.
