Sales Tax Calculator splits any amount into net, tax and gross in either direction — adding a rate to a pre-tax shelf price, or extracting the levy buried inside a tax-inclusive receipt — and shows the formula so the arithmetic can be checked by hand. Shop owners can preview a register total before a promotion, bookkeepers can isolate the tax component of an invoice line, and shoppers can see what a purchase really costs once tax is added. Rates are entirely user-supplied: the page claims nothing about any jurisdiction or real tax law. Each money step rounds half-up to the cent in a fixed order, so net plus tax equals gross exactly in both directions. All calculation stays on your device. Keep a note of the rate you used, because a later remittance must match the figure the customer actually saw. Reverse mode is the one to reach for when a receipt shows only the final total. Business users often run the gross figure through reverse mode first, then check the net price against a supplier quote before committing to an order.

Frequently asked questions about Sales Tax Calculator

How is extracted tax calculated?

Net equals gross divided by one plus rate over one hundred; tax equals gross minus net. Both round half-up to cents.

Does it know my local sales tax rate?

No. Rates are entirely user-supplied: the tool stores no jurisdiction data and makes no claim about any real-world tax.

Why do net plus tax exactly equal gross?

Each money step rounds half-up to cents in a fixed order, so the invariant holds to the cent in both modes by construction.

Is this tax advice?

No. It is deterministic arithmetic on numbers you supply. Real liability depends on rules this tool does not know.
