Discount price or percentage change: which answer do you need?

Choose between sale pricing, general percent maths, tip splitting, and adding tax to a displayed price.

Percentage questions look alike until the unknown changes. A discount asks what a price becomes, a percentage calculator answers an arbitrary proportion or change, a tip splits a bill, and a sales-tax tool moves between net and gross. Match the unknown, not the keyword.

Use the discount calculator when a price and a percent are known

It returns the sale price, the amount saved and the total for the discount you enter. Use it for a single marked-down item where the starting price is clear; stacking several discounts needs each step applied in order.

Use the percentage calculator for the general case

The percentage tool handles X percent of Y, ratios and percent change between two values. Use it when the question is not a retail discount, such as growth between two months or a proportion of a budget.

Use tip or sales tax when the bill structure differs

A tip calculator splits a bill and a tip across people, while the sales-tax tool adds tax to a net price or extracts it from a gross total. Both answer pricing questions that a plain discount would misstate.

Frequently asked questions about percent calculations

Does a 20 percent discount mean subtracting 20 from the price?

No. It subtracts 20 percent of the price. On a price of 50, the saving is 10 and the result is 40, not 30.

How do I calculate a price before tax?

Use the sales-tax tool in extract mode, entering the gross total and the rate. Dividing by one plus the rate reverses the tax addition without rounding drift.

Can the tip calculator split unevenly?

It divides the total by the number of people, which assumes an even split. For uneven shares, calculate the total first and divide it manually.
