Inputs
contribution = price − variable cost. break-even units = ceiling(fixed ÷ contribution). Units round up; money rounds half-up. Estimates only — not financial advice.

Enter fixed costs, a unit selling price, and a unit variable cost above.
Break-Even Calculator answers the first question any product has to answer: how many units must sell before the fixed costs of making them are covered. You supply the fixed cost for the period, the price you charge and the variable cost of one unit, and the page returns the unit count, the revenue that count represents, and the arithmetic in between. Units always round up, because a break-even point of 41.2 means forty-two sales and a calculator that reports a fraction is describing something you cannot do. A price at or below the variable cost is rejected outright rather than returned as a negative unit count: at that price every sale digs the hole deeper, and no volume fixes it. The model is deliberately single-product, with no mix, seasonality or demand curve, and the page says so - it is a floor to plan against, not a forecast. Use it to test whether a discount that raises volume still clears the rent, or to compare a higher price against a higher supplier cost before switching.

How to use Break-Even Calculator
- Enter fixed costs for the period, the unit selling price, and the unit variable cost.
- Read contribution per unit, the contribution ratio, and break-even units.
- Copy the summary or clear to test different assumptions.
What you get
- The number of units needed to cover fixed costs, always rounded up because a fraction of a unit cannot be sold.
- The revenue that unit count represents at the price you entered.
- A rejection when the selling price is at or below variable cost, because no break-even exists at that price.
When to use Break-Even Calculator
- Check how many units of a new product must sell to cover a month of rent.
- Compare a higher price against a higher unit cost before changing suppliers.
- Test whether a discount that increases volume still clears fixed costs before the month closes.
Frequently asked questions about Break-Even Calculator
How is the break-even unit count rounded?
Upward, always. Fixed costs divided by contribution usually lands between whole units, and selling a fraction of a unit is impossible, so the ceiling is the honest target.
What happens when the price is below the variable cost?
The tool rejects the input. Each unit would lose money, so contribution is negative and no break-even point exists at any volume — a finite answer would be misleading.
What does contribution margin mean here?
It is the selling price minus the variable cost per unit, and the ratio is that difference over the price. Fixed costs are paid from this contribution, not from revenue.
Does this model demand or capacity?
No. It is deterministic arithmetic. It assumes you can sell every unit and ignores demand, discounts, and capacity limits, so treat it as planning arithmetic only.
