URL Encoder percent-encodes a string following RFC 3986, or decodes one that has already been encoded, with full Unicode support in both directions. Only ASCII alphanumerics and the four unreserved marks are left untouched; every other code point is encoded from its UTF-8 bytes, which is why an Arabic sentence produces a much longer encoded string than an English one of the same length. Spaces become plus signs when encoding, and both plus signs and percent-twenty decode back to a space, matching how form bodies are read. Decoding is strict: a valid percent sequence is decoded and anything else is rejected rather than guessed at, because a lenient decoder turns a corrupted string into a plausible-looking wrong one. It is the tool for encoding a query value before it goes into a URL, for reading a percent-encoded parameter copied out of a log, and for preparing a form body by hand. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Only ASCII alphanumerics and dash, dot, underscore and tilde survive unencoded; everything else is UTF-8 encoded first and then percent-encoded, and decoding accepts only valid %XX sequences.

How to use URL Encode/Decode

  1. Paste text or a percent-encoded string.
  2. Choose Encode or Decode.
  3. Copy or download the result.

What you get

  • A percent-encoded string following RFC 3986, or the decoded form when you go the other way.
  • Only ASCII alphanumerics and the four unreserved marks left untouched; everything else encoded from its UTF-8 bytes.
  • A strict decode that accepts valid %XX sequences and rejects anything else rather than guessing.

When to use URL Encode/Decode

  • Encode query string values for safe inclusion in URLs.
  • Decode percent-encoded strings from logs or URLs.
  • Prepare data for application/x-www-form-urlencoded bodies.
  • Decode a tracking URL copied out of a log to read the parameter values a server actually received.

Frequently asked questions about URL Encode/Decode

Does this tool send my data anywhere?

No. All encoding and decoding runs locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to any server.

Why does encode produce '+' for spaces?

This follows the application/x-www-form-urlencoded convention. Decoding treats both '+' and '%20' as spaces.

Can it handle emoji and non-Latin scripts?

Yes. Text is encoded as UTF-8 bytes, then each byte is percent-encoded. All Unicode code points round-trip correctly.

Why does decode reject my input?

Decode mode only accepts valid percent-encoded strings: alphanumerics, '-', '.', '_', '~', and valid '%XX' sequences. Stray '%' or invalid hex digits are rejected.
