Hash Generator

Compute cryptographic hashes (MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512) in the browser.

Browser onlyYour data never leaves this device.

Runs entirely in your browser. Your input never leaves this device and is never stored.

Details: Privacy policy

Input

UTF-8 encoded. Nothing is stored.

Result

No input yet.

Enter text above to generate a hash.

Hashing is not encryption: digests cannot be reversed, and weak algorithms (MD5, SHA-1) are checksums only — never use them for security.

Hash Generator computes a cryptographic digest of your text with the Web Crypto API, offering MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512. The page is explicit about which of those to trust: MD5 and SHA-1 are marked weak, because both are cryptographically broken and neither belongs in a security decision, while the SHA-2 family is the set to reach for when the digest has to mean something. Input is encoded as UTF-8 before hashing, which matters when the text contains characters outside ASCII: the same visible string in a different encoding produces a different digest. There is no streaming, so the whole input has to fit in memory, and the page says so rather than failing on a large paste. It is the tool for comparing a downloaded file's digest against the one a publisher listed, for producing deterministic identifiers from strings, or for seeing how a one-character change produces a completely different result. Everything is computed locally; nothing is sent anywhere.

How to use Hash Generator

  1. Enter text and select a hash algorithm.
  2. View the hexadecimal hash output.
  3. Copy or download the result.

What you get

  • A digest in the algorithm you pick: MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512.
  • A weak-algorithm warning on MD5 and SHA-1, because both are cryptographically broken.
  • The hex digest computed by Web Crypto from the UTF-8 bytes of your input.

When to use Hash Generator

  • Verify file integrity by comparing hashes.
  • Generate deterministic identifiers from strings.
  • Learn about hash functions and their properties.
  • Compare a downloaded file's digest against the one the publisher listed, without sending the file anywhere.

Frequently asked questions about Hash Generator

Does Hash Generator send my data anywhere?

No. All hashing runs locally in your browser using the Web Crypto API. Nothing is transmitted.

Why are MD5 and SHA-1 marked as weak?

Both have known collision vulnerabilities. They're fine for checksums or non-security uses, but never use them for passwords, certificates, or security-critical applications.

Which algorithm should I use?

SHA-256 is a good default for most uses. SHA-512 for higher security margin. Avoid MD5 and SHA-1 for anything security-related.

Can I hash large files?

This tool hashes text input only. For files, use a dedicated file hashing tool that supports streaming.
