XML Formatter & Validator pretty-prints pasted markup and explains why a malformed document failed, parsing everything locally where external entities cannot resolve. It serves developers inspecting a minified feed or configuration file, integrators confirming an export is well-formed before importing it, and anyone who needs a readable diff of markup produced by another system. Well-formedness is strict — a mismatched or unclosed tag is an error rather than a guess — and only the first fault is reported so the message stays actionable. Attribute values, text content and comments are preserved while inter-element whitespace is normalised, and the output is written as UTF-8 with a fresh declaration. Because parsing never resolves external entities, XXE-style attacks cannot trigger here. Compare the formatted copy with the original when a partner reports a difference, because normalised whitespace sometimes reveals a real change. Namespaces are preserved exactly as written, and attribute quoting is left untouched. Indentation uses spaces, while the compact option strips the whitespace between elements. Nested elements indent one level deeper, so the structure reads clearly at a glance.

Frequently asked questions about XML Formatter & Validator

Does XML Formatter upload my data?

No. Parsing and formatting run locally in your browser; nothing is sent, stored, or logged.

Are external entities resolved?

Never. Browser XML parsers do not fetch external entities, so XXE-style attacks cannot trigger here.

What counts as invalid?

Anything not well-formed: mismatched tags, unclosed elements, or bad nesting. The first fault is reported.

Does formatting change my data?

Only whitespace between elements. Text content, attributes, and comments are preserved.
