Inputs

ROI = (final + gains − costs − cost) ÷ cost × 100. Zero cost leaves ROI undefined. Money rounds half-up. Estimates only — not investment advice.

Enter an initial cost and a final value above.

ROI Calculator works out net gain and return on investment from an initial cost, a final value and any additional gains or costs along the way. Keeping the side amounts separate is the point: a repair bill, a shipping charge or a resale fee changes the answer, and folding them invisibly into the purchase price hides which part of the return came from where. The page returns the net gain and the ratio, and shows an em dash rather than infinity when the initial cost is zero, because a return on nothing is undefined rather than infinite. Additional amounts must be non-negative and there is no holding period, so the figure describes a single transaction rather than an annualised performance. It ignores time value of money, fees and inflation, and the page says so before the result rather than after. Use it to measure the return on a piece of equipment after repairs and resale, or to compare two advertising spends that carried different extra costs. The result is a single transaction's return, so a comparison between two opportunities is only fair when both are measured over a similar period, which the page states rather than assuming.

How to use ROI Calculator

  1. Enter the initial cost and the final value.
  2. Add any extra gains or costs if there were side amounts, plus a currency label.
  3. Read net gain, ROI, and total return, or copy the summary.

What you get

  • Net gain and return on investment from an initial cost, a final value and any side amounts.
  • Additional gains and costs applied separately, so a repair bill is not folded invisibly into the purchase price.
  • An em dash rather than infinity when the initial cost is zero, with the reason shown.

When to use ROI Calculator

  • Measure the return on a piece of equipment after repairs and resale.
  • Compare two ad spends where each had different extra fees.
  • Compare a repair-and-resell against selling as-is, by entering each as its own scenario.

Frequently asked questions about ROI Calculator

How is the return on investment calculated?

Net gain is total return minus initial cost, where total return is final value plus extra gains minus extra costs. ROI is net gain divided by initial cost, as a percentage.

Why is ROI blank when the initial cost is zero?

ROI divides by the initial cost. At zero there is no ratio to compute, so the tool reports — and shows the net gain on its own instead of inventing a number.

Does this account for how long the money was tied up?

No. It has no holding period and ignores the time value of money, so it is a simple ratio, not an annualized return.

Can ROI be negative?

Yes. If the total return is below the initial cost the net gain and ROI are both negative, which the tool shows with a minus sign.
