Replace Smart/Straight Quotes normalises quotation marks in either direction. Curly-to-straight is the practical repair: text copied from a word processor or a website often carries typographic marks that break code, JSON, CSV or a plain-text form, and a straight apostrophe is what those systems expect. That direction is a direct map, including the German low quotes and guillemets, so it is predictable and reversible in intent. Straight-to-curly goes the other way for copy that should look typeset. It is a heuristic rather than a typesetting engine: a quote at the start of the text or after whitespace or an opening bracket becomes an opening mark, a quote after a word becomes a closing mark, and a single quote between two letters or digits becomes an apostrophe. That handles ordinary prose well and can still misplace a mark in unusual punctuation, which the page states. Only quotation marks change; dashes, ellipses, spaces and letters stay exactly as they were. It is the tool for fixing pasted code, preparing plain-text exports, and making a draft look consistent before publication. The smart direction also treats a quote after an opening bracket as an opening mark, which handles dialogue inside parentheses without a separate rule.
