Remove Letter Accents turns accented letters into their plain forms: cafe becomes cafe, naive loses its diaeresis, and a German sharp s becomes ss. The operation works per code point by decomposing a character with Unicode NFD and dropping the combining marks that follow it, then applying a short map for letters that do not decompose at all, such as o-slash, l-stroke and the ligatures ae and oe. Everything else - spaces, punctuation, digits, line breaks - is left exactly as it was, which is what separates this from a slug generator that also lowercases and replaces separators. The page states the scope rather than implying a transliteration engine. Combining marks are removed in any script, so Arabic harakat and Hebrew niqqud disappear too, and the canonical composition of a letter may change even when it looks similar. Characters with no Latin base form pass through untouched, so Chinese, Japanese, emoji and symbols are preserved. It is the tool for normalising names before an import, comparing strings that differ only by accents, or preparing text for a system that rejects non-ASCII input.

How to use Remove Letter Accents

  1. Paste the accented text.
  2. Read the converted output and the changed-character count.
  3. Copy the result or clear to start over.

What you get

  • The text with combining marks removed and common accented letters mapped to base forms.
  • A count of characters that actually changed.
  • Everything else preserved verbatim, including punctuation, digits and line breaks.

When to use Remove Letter Accents

  • Normalise accented names before importing them into a system that expects ASCII.
  • Compare two spellings that differ only by diacritics.
  • Strip Arabic harakat or Hebrew niqqud when a plain consonant skeleton is wanted.

Frequently asked questions about Remove Letter Accents

Does it also remove Arabic harakat?

Yes. Harakat are combining marks, so the same pass removes them. That is useful for a consonant skeleton and destructive for vocalised text, so keep a copy.

Is this a transliteration tool?

No. It maps accented Latin letters and a few special letters to base forms. It does not convert Greek, Cyrillic or CJK into Latin spelling.

Why did my sharp s become two letters?

The German sharp s has no single-character base form, so it is expanded to ss by convention. Other ligatures such as ae and oe behave the same way.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser; nothing is sent to a server or stored after the page closes.
