NATO Phonetic to Text reverses the spelling alphabet: Hotel India becomes HI, and a slash becomes a space. It is the page to reach for when someone has dictated a reference in phonetic words and you need the actual characters, or when a log contains a spelled callsign that has to be turned back into something searchable. Matching is case-insensitive and accepts the standard spellings plus the common variants Xray for X-ray and Alpha for Alfa. Unknown words are kept exactly as written and counted, so a typo or a non-alphabet word does not silently vanish. Two limits are stated: case is not recoverable because the alphabet does not encode it, and the original spacing cannot be reconstructed beyond the word-break marker. It is a decoding aid, not a translation tool, and it makes no claim about the meaning of the result. Everything runs locally in your browser. A word that is not in the alphabet is usually a typo or a different spelling alphabet, so it is left visible rather than mapped to the nearest guess. The decoder does not know which language the original message was in, and it does not invent punctuation that was never spelled. Commas and line breaks are accepted as separators, which helps when the words arrive one per line from a form.

Frequently asked questions about NATO Phonetic to Text

Why is the result uppercase?

The alphabet does not encode case. Uppercase is the conventional rendering; lowercase would be a guess.

What happens to a word that is not in the alphabet?

It is kept as written and counted as unknown, so a typo is visible rather than silently removed.

Does it accept Alpha and Xray?

Yes. Those common variants are accepted alongside the standard Alfa and X-ray spellings.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Decoding runs in your browser; nothing is sent to a server or stored.
