Average Sentence Length reports how many words a passage puts in a sentence, together with the sentence and word counts that produced the figure. It is a quick structural measurement: a draft averaging thirty words per sentence reads differently from one averaging twelve, and seeing the number is often enough to find the paragraph that needs splitting. Sentences are detected by terminal punctuation - full stop, question mark, exclamation mark, ellipsis and the Arabic question mark - and the words are Unicode letter and digit tokens, with internal apostrophes and hyphens kept together. That means abbreviations and decimals can inflate the sentence count, and the page says so rather than presenting the average as a grade. The result is rounded to one decimal and shown with both counts, so a suspicious figure can be traced. It is the tool for trimming a dense paragraph, comparing two drafts, and checking subtitle or caption length before publication. Long sentences are not automatically bad, and a low average is not automatically clear; the number is a prompt to look at the sentence that produced it, not a verdict. For a second signal, compare it with average word length, because a sentence can be long with short words or short with dense ones. A very high figure usually means one runaway sentence rather than uniform density, which is why the sentence count is shown next to the average. Use it alongside a word count rather than alone, since a long passage and a short one can share an average.

Frequently asked questions about Average Sentence Length

How are sentences detected?

On terminal punctuation: full stop, question mark, exclamation mark, ellipsis and the Arabic question mark. There is no grammar model.

Why is my sentence count too high?

Abbreviations and decimals contain full stops, so they split the text. The extra fragments raise the count and lower the average.

Is this a readability score?

No. It is a raw measurement of words per sentence. It makes no claim about grade level or comprehension.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Measurement runs in your browser; nothing is sent to a server or stored.
