Image to Base64

Turn a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or GIF into a Base64 data URL or raw text without uploading it.

Browser onlyYour data never leaves this device.

Encoding runs entirely in your browser. The file's bytes are read locally and never uploaded, stored, or logged.

Input

Drop files here or Browse

Drag and drop works here too.

PNG, JPEG, WebP, or GIF up to 10 MB. Drag and drop or browse.

The file is read as raw bytes and converted to text in this browser. It is never decoded, drawn, or uploaded, and the Base64 always comes out longer than the file it encodes.

Choose an image to get its data URL and raw Base64 text.

Image to Base64 reads a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or GIF file and returns its exact bytes as Base64 text plus a ready-to-paste data URL. Nothing is decoded or redrawn: the file's own bytes are encoded, so the text can be turned back into the same image, and the size increase shown on the page is measured from the characters the tool actually produced. The MIME type in the data URL is detected from the file's signature, not copied from the extension. A 10 MB file ceiling keeps long strings from freezing the tab, and the characters are produced locally rather than by a server round trip.

How to use Image to Base64

  1. Choose a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or GIF file up to 10 MB.
  2. Check the reported encoded size — Base64 is always longer than the file it encodes.
  3. Copy the data URL or the raw Base64, or download either as a .txt file.

What you get

  • The image as a Base64 data URL or raw Base64 text, with a short prefix on the page and the full text available to copy or download.
  • The character count and the growth over the binary file, because Base64 is roughly a third longer and the tool never claims a saving.
  • A magic-byte check that rejects a file whose bytes do not match its reported type, with the 10 MB limit applied before reading.

When to use Image to Base64

  • Inline a small logo in a CSS file or HTML email where the page must work without external image requests.
  • Paste an image as text into a config file, fixture, or JSON payload that accepts only plain strings.
  • Check how much a data URL would grow a payload before committing to embedding the image.

Frequently asked questions about Image to Base64

What is the difference between the data URL and the raw Base64?

They contain the same Base64 text. The data URL adds a prefix such as data:image/png;base64, so browsers can render it directly in an img src or CSS url(). The raw Base64 is the payload on its own, for APIs that expect only the encoded string.

Does Base64 encoding make my image smaller?

No. Base64 represents every three bytes as four characters, so the text is about 33% longer than the file, and the data URL prefix adds a few characters more. Compress the image first if size matters, then encode the smaller file.

Should I embed an image as a data URL?

Only for small files. A data URL is fetched with the HTML or CSS that contains it, so it avoids one extra request but cannot be cached separately and inflates every response that includes it. Large photos are almost always better served as separate files.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read in your browser with the File API and encoded locally. There is no upload, no server processing, and no copy kept after you clear the result or close the tab.
