Enter a cost and either a selling price or a target markup above.
Markup Calculator prices a product from a target markup, or reads markup and margin back out of a cost and a selling price. It exists because those two percentages are constantly confused and the confusion costs money: a fifty percent markup is a thirty-three percent margin, and a page that reports only one of them invites a decision made on the wrong number. You can work in either direction - enter cost and price to see both rates, or enter cost and a target markup to derive the price - and the result always shows the pair together so the relationship stays visible. A zero cost leaves markup undefined and a zero price leaves margin undefined, both shown as an em dash with the reason rather than as infinity. Target markup is bounded between minus one hundred and one thousand percent, and the currency label is display only. Use it to set a price from a required markup, or to check whether a shelf price leaves the margin your rent actually needs. Both directions are offered rather than one, because pricing happens in both: a supplier gives you a cost and you choose a markup, or a shelf already carries a price and you need to know what it leaves. The zero-cost and zero-price cases are shown rather than thrown, since a giveaway or a donated item is a real situation and an error message would hide the fact that the other figure is still perfectly well defined.
How to use Markup Calculator
- Choose whether you know the selling price or a target markup.
- Enter the cost and the second value, plus a display currency.
- Read the selling price, profit, markup, and margin, or copy the summary.
What you get
- A selling price derived from cost and a target markup, or markup and margin derived from cost and price.
- Markup and margin side by side, because a 50% markup is a 33% margin and confusing them is expensive.
- An em dash rather than infinity when cost or price is zero, with the reason stated.
When to use Markup Calculator
- Set a selling price from a required 40% markup on a supplier cost.
- Check whether a shelf price leaves the margin your rent actually needs.
- Check what margin a competitor's shelf price would leave if your supplier cost applied to it.
Frequently asked questions about Markup Calculator
How does a target markup become a selling price?
Cost is multiplied by one plus the target markup over one hundred. Markup and margin are then recomputed from that derived price, so the numbers always describe the same sale.
Why is markup shown as a dash at zero cost?
Markup divides by cost. At zero cost the ratio has no finite value, so the tool reports — and explains it instead of printing Infinity.
What is the difference between markup and margin here?
Markup divides profit by cost; margin divides the same profit by selling price. Margin is always the smaller of the two for a profitable product.
Is this a pricing recommendation?
No. It is deterministic arithmetic on numbers you enter. It ignores taxes, fees, and overhead, and is not financial advice.
